AI referrals: how to connect answer visibility with signups
Track identifiable AI referral traffic, completed signups and product activation with a practical workflow that keeps attribution limits visible.
To connect AI visibility with signups, track three separate records: the answers you observed, the visits your analytics can identify, and the customers who reached a useful product outcome. Join those records only where your data supports the connection.
An answer mentioning your SaaS does not count as a visit. A visit does not count as a customer. Keeping those distinctions clear makes it easier to decide whether to improve discovery, a landing page or onboarding.
Give each measurement a clear job
| Record | What it tells you | What it cannot establish alone |
|---|---|---|
| Saved AI answer | What appeared for a recorded question and date | How many real buyers saw that answer |
| Source-attributed session | Analytics attributed a session to an identified source | The exact conversation that produced it |
| Completed signup | An account met your signup requirement | Whether the customer experienced value |
| Activation | The customer reached a defined useful outcome | Whether they will pay or renew |
| Paid customer | A purchase occurred | Whether AI visibility caused the purchase |
For an invoicing SaaS, activation could mean sending the first invoice. For an integration product, it could mean completing a successful sync. Choose an outcome that demonstrates use, rather than counting another screen viewed.
1. Find identifiable AI traffic in GA4
Start in Reports > Acquisition > Traffic acquisition. Change the table dimension to Session source / medium, then inspect the sources that actually appear. Report navigation can vary with the property's configuration. Google's Traffic acquisition guide
OpenAI says ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral URLs from its search results. Search your acquisition table for chatgpt.com, then check the recorded medium rather than requiring every result to say referral. A campaign source and a referral domain are different inputs. OpenAI's publisher FAQ
For other assistants, build a source list from values you receive. Do not assume one universal filter captures every platform or visit.
For a consistent date range, record the source, sessions, landing pages and completed signup activity. Test your own path separately to check that redirects preserve the source signal and your events arrive. Exclude those tests from acquisition reporting.
A source label is evidence for attribution, not proof of independent discovery. Manually tagged links can create the same label, while missing tags or referrers can leave genuine visits unidentified.
2. Keep acquisition scopes separate
GA4's First user dimensions describe the source that initially acquired a user. Session dimensions describe session acquisition. Event-scoped attribution assigns credit for key events and can use a different attribution model. Google's scope guide
Choose the question before choosing the report:
- Which sources brought sessions this week? Use session acquisition.
- How were these users originally acquired? Use first-user acquisition.
- Which interactions receive credit for a purchase? Inspect event attribution and its settings.
A direct return visit may retain credit for an earlier non-direct source, so a session source label does not prove that visit came directly from an assistant.
Do not add those reports together as if they counted separate customers. Returning visitors and attribution rules can make their source labels differ. Record the scope and follow-up window with every comparison.
If checkout or another managed step sends visitors through a third-party domain, investigate whether it is receiving misleading referral credit. Google's unwanted-referrals guidance covers cases such as payment processors. Apply changes only to the relevant domains; excluding an assistant would hide a source you want to measure.
3. Count completed signups, then follow the same customers
Define signup completion clearly, such as a successfully created and verified account. Trigger the event when that requirement is met, rather than on a signup-button click. Reconcile it with your application records and deduplicate repeated events. For GA4 key-event reporting, mark that completed-signup event as a key event and select it specifically; the total across all key events is not a signup count.
Keep a documented cohort: the unique new accounts connected to the identified sessions under your chosen method. Follow those same accounts through activation and payment. Do not divide this week's payments from older customers by this week's new signups.
Use a fixed follow-up window, such as 30 days after signup, and give each cohort that much time before comparing outcomes. Keep owner accounts, QA accounts and known automation outside customer totals. Respect your collection and consent settings; an unmeasured journey should remain unknown.
Here is an invented example, not AnswerProbe customer data:
| Measure | Hypothetical count |
|---|---|
| Sessions attributed to an identified AI source during the acquisition week | 60 |
| Sessions containing a completed signup | 6 |
| Unique new accounts created in those six sessions | 6 |
| Those accounts activated within 30 days of signup | 3 |
| Those accounts paid within 30 days of signup | 1 |
Six signup sessions divided by 60 sessions gives a 10% session signup rate. Three activated accounts divided by six new accounts gives a 50% cohort activation rate. Those denominators answer different questions. One purchase is an observation to investigate, not a dependable forecast or industry benchmark.
4. Treat Google AI impressions as visibility evidence
Google now documents a dedicated Generative AI performance report in Search Console for impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode. It includes page, country, device and date views. A missing report can reflect insufficient impressions. Google's report documentation
These are impressions, not a count of website sessions or signups. The data also belongs to overall Web search reporting, so do not add it to Web totals as extra traffic. Google's reporting announcement
Use the dedicated report to investigate Google AI visibility. Use site and product analytics for visits and outcomes. An increase in google / organic sessions alone does not establish which Google experience generated each visit.
5. Turn disagreements into a useful next action
More monitored mentions, flat identifiable traffic: inspect the questions and cited destinations. Your sample may not reflect buyer demand, the answer may satisfy the user without a click, or tracking may miss visits. Check before assigning a cause.
More visits, few signups: review the landing page against the intent that brought visitors. Can they understand the product, its fit and the next step?
Signups, little activation: investigate onboarding and whether the promised outcome is reachable. Publishing more articles does not fix an unusable first experience.
Activation, few purchases: examine ongoing usefulness, plan scope and commercial fit. Compare mature cohorts before drawing conclusions.
The AI answer tracking guide explains how to keep observation records comparable. AnswerProbe's illustrative sample report is a static example, not a live scan, showing the kind of answer evidence to inspect. Pair that evidence with your own analytics, product and billing records when evaluating acquisition.
Frequently asked questions
Can GA4 show traffic from ChatGPT?
It can identify visits carrying a source signal such as utm_source=chatgpt.com, when your implementation captures it. Inspect Session source / medium and the values you actually receive. This does not reveal every conversation or every AI-influenced visit.
Can I match a signup to the exact AI answer that caused it?
A source label alone cannot make that match. It identifies a traffic source, not the user's full prompt and answer. Optional customer feedback can add context, but it remains self-reported evidence.
Does zero identifiable AI traffic mean nobody found us through AI?
No. Someone might see an answer without clicking, return later through another route, or arrive without a usable source signal. Report zero identified visits within your measurement scope, rather than claiming zero influence.
What is a good AI referral conversion rate?
There is no single rate this article can justify for your SaaS. Start with your own counts, landing pages and mature cohorts. Use a consistent denominator and investigate activation and paying customers alongside the percentage.
